Sam & Max: Season 2 (and bits of Season 1 because I want to)

The Lord of Leisure | January 12, 2008

Sam: “Where should I put this thing so that it doesn’t hurt anyone we know or care about?”
Max: “Out the window, Sam. There’s nobody but strangers out there.”
– Sam and Max Hit the Road

That alone should tell you what kind of humour we are working with for this review of Sam and Max: Freelance Police Season 2 (and for that matter, Season 1) Sam & Max, of course being the demented brain bastards from the mind of Steve Purcell.

This reminds me of Top of the Pops. I don't know why...

For those of you who will not likely have a clue what Sam and Max are, I’m going to have take you all on a slight history tangent, though don’t worry it doesn’t get wibbly wobbly and black and white with sound crackles. Not unless you want it to.

Sam is a dog in a suit and Max is a rabbit, well sort of rabbit, I do think he’s rabid though as suggested in the first season of these games. All in all, their strange adventures seem to involve wandering around solving crimes of a bizarre nature all the while over articulating everything they see and do. Violently if possible.

Now the first game, Sam and Max hit the road was released by Lucasarts back in the heyday of Adventure games back in the mid nineties, before this internet doo-hickey took off, along with multi-player bitch slap contests and was one of the finest examples of “funny stories being told through a point with the mouse and click randomly until things happen” game.

Wednesday’s Remit

The Lord of Leisure | January 9, 2008

The Site has been updated to reflect recent security issues with the blog software, also some of the require plugins needed an update with others which need to be tested because the last time I updated them, the thing broke so I’m a wee bit more cautious.

No, I've haven't shown Sweden highlighted because it looks like a penis. One thing I have noticed: Sweden is creeping up the ranks in terms of visitors to the site. Hmm, perhaps they have twigged onto the naughty that is all around here. Or not, who knows? The only thing I will say is that I’m an equal oppotunity offender, so I will insult everyone if required. See, everyone can join in!

The new season of the Ooh Sometimes Podcast is going well. I’m currently in the middle of writing Episode 1, with bits of Episode 2 and both promise to be slightly interesting in terms of content.

Along with the shows, the review of Sam and Max: Freelance Police is taking shape, which the game itself is now in it’s second season as well. I will explain all about that in the review and with catchy lines and bizzare puzzles you won’t want to miss out on the verdict.

Another review is in progress too, Gears of War. You will have seen a screenshot earlier on the blog, so at the very least you know it’s nice to have a look at. The problem is, that the XBox 360 version has been out over a year now, so does the PC version match it and more? Or will it leave with the feeling that you get ripped off by those fancy resturants where they say less is more which is why you only have a biscuit for the main course?

Sunday Supplement

The Lord of Leisure | January 6, 2008

On this glorious Sunday Morn, sitting here as a typical man about the house with greasy sausage sandwiches on my lap, I find myself looking on in horror at the household chores and other duties that lay before me.

Just do your uni work and no-one needs to get hurt. You see, for months I have been putting off working on the degree’s final tasks as the motivation has more than just disappeared, it’s been brutally beaten, and stuffed into a black van being driven off at high speeds only for the next day, a ransom note to appear through the post-box containing instructions for the money and a severed toe to know that they are serious.

As it stands there are two modules left for me to do, a work-based project and another module of our choice which may or may not be carried out at the University due to lack of intelligence on their part. This year, I have just wanted the thing over with; it’s like a bad smell from the toilet that you just can’t get rid of.

The fun starts again in earnest next week and with only a few months left, it cannot be over soon enough. To that end I have started on the work based project, which is something complex and boring and for once the geekdom shall be left outside along with a note for the kidnappers saying they can keep the motivation for all I care.

Nostalgia, there’s an oinkment for that I’m sure.

The Lord of Leisure | January 5, 2008

It was rather bizarre while playing Sam & Max: Ice Station Santa for the purpose of review appearing here or on the podcast, (haven’t decided if a healthy dose of humour, or more blood and guts aka Gears of War will be the best, though I suppose I could do both but that could be a wee bit too much for people) that memories came flooding back for lots of old games, not just adventure but older games we will never see the like off again and the way things have moved on in terms of entertainment.

But I now wish to scare you. Does anyone remember what we didn’t have when the internet as we all know and use to download material of a questionable nature today? Remember a time without Facebook (just gave at least 3 people a heart attack there) and we used to go out and about and socialise while the aforementioned people adverse to sunlight stayed in with their slightly shiny machines?

All you have to is step back about 13 or 14 years ago to the beginnings of when Quake was the next big thing from Doom because it introduced proper 3D shooting monsters (with a taste for brown) and POGS were the only thing to lust for. Well, you wanted them if you were still my age then.

My eyes, they burn!!

The Lord of Leisure | January 4, 2008

No I haven’t seen my sizable belly again, I returned from the opticians yesterday after the eyes started hurting again while driving the next day and this was even after a good long nights’ sleep. In truth they slightly twinge now but not as bad.

After sitting in the dark room telling the nice eye doctor man which spots were clearer and saying which is better number 1 or number 2, (and again, number 3 or number 4. At which point, I was getting tempted to say: Which implement is better to beat you with? The cricket bat or the chair?) He kindly informed me that my right eye has changed and I would need new lenses. The price of which comes close to £200 for the pair for slightly thinner lenses than I have right now.

These may be what I have to wear if I don't get some cash.I was considering the thinner lenses as these current ones I have were fitted by Staybrite while they were busy replacing the kitchen windows earlier last year, and frankly for once it would be nice not to have the nickname of Mr Magoo, well in truth some other nicknames spring to mind as well.

I am also considering new glasses as the designer frames I currently use has started to crack (as evidence of trying to adjust them so they didn’t slip again, well as much.) but again it has to wait until next month for the funds to be available.

2nd January: Ate lots.

The Lord of Leisure | January 2, 2008

So here we are, the second day of the New Year, filled with hopes and dreams of what is to come, along with various New Year’s resolutions and seemingly endless amounts of fitness DVDs.

I would comment further on New Year, some of the resolutions I do have and ones I would actually hope to keep, but I am saving that for the podcast, which I will being sorting out shortly and I am hoping to have recorded for the 19th of January which should hopefully have the following content.

  • Gamers’ Corner: Another award winning review with SFX
  • New Year, New Season: With the new year comes a new season of the show, and of course you will find out about the Lord of Leisure’s resolutions, and some of the things which are already planned for this year
  • Another part to be finalised, believe it or not, since the review of the naughty film, I’ve been low on a few ideas, and well I need to have a chat with some people to hear what they have to say.
  • There will also be two more great bits of music all of which I bet will leave you all chomping at the bit in excitement.

    Happy New Year!

The Lord of Leisure | January 1, 2008

Health & Safety said no fireworks. B******ds.So 2007 has gone forever unless you happen to have a time machine and here we all are in 2008. Here’s hoping everyone has a good un, and hopefully they have many things to look upon from the previous year with joy.

It certainly has been an eventful year for many people, doing many naughty things and this year will certainly see the continuation of that. Though more than likely, not as many music festivals as we would like. Shame, as I would love to do Glastonbury again but perhaps the time has come to actually be dry for once.

See you all soon with plenty of fine sprits and more ramblings in the coming days about what the new year will bring, a review of the past year in terms of what actually happened, some resoulutions that will fail and more geekiness from the Lord of Leisure.

What more could you ask for? :)
