I’ll be back

The Lord of Leisure | January 27, 2009

For some time now it’s increasingly difficult where I am to get more than 5 minutes to myself to write up what’s going on and this is having a massive knock on effect on the blogging that I’ve been able to do. Basically until I move somewhere else, Ooh Sometimes in content will resemble Chester city centre; void of life.

(Well at the very least I’ll get complaints about saying Chester is lifeless so that will break things up a fair bit)

In terms of what’s been going on in recent times, it’s been all work and a very small amount of play. Office 2007 is getting rolled out now, and in the next few days you can expect a utter invasion over at Computer Weekly, discussing the entire logon script stuff from start to finish along with what issues we encountered during the saga. The last post was the 20th of Jan, and perhaps again it’s a sign of very little time to give over to properly documenting what goes down in funkytown.

I viewed a series of expensive and small studio flats just 10 minutes walk from Work in the center of London today and it made me cry again. Because they have the size of studios I can only dream of right now (yep, despite being small, they are still bigger than my damn room), but also it cuts out having to pay for monthly travel, killing people on the tube with a combination of armpit smells and working the kidneys on them after they complain I don’t wash enough, basically those are at the top of the list despite the fact it would mean that my entire months salary would be gone on just living.

Who said knowing how to add things up was a good thing?

Until next time, which given the frequency of these posts, will be in 2014, take care and have nightmares. Err, wait no….

We’ve gotta modify the van

The Lord of Leisure | January 19, 2009

What I need is an elite team of commandos. Shame this is real life and none actually exist. And in true fashion after the weekend, where were all the lovely posts that I was to write about various exciting things going on, the review of 2008, which is increasingly looking like it will be 2010 before I’m done with that, and maybe we will have written up about 2010 just in time for the London Olympics to fail, in which we all complain bitterly, maybe throw a chair at someone.

The point is, I’m basically not doing very well with trying to write. You see, where I currently live, it’s become increasingly difficult to write, and this is mainly because people are seeking attention all the time and when you finally do muster up the energy, then people are instantly noisy, looking at the caveman dribbling on the wall and wondering what could it mean, aside from the fact that he’s a bit thick.

I’m one of those writers who basically cannot write when someone else is around, simply because I don’t want anyone to see the finished article before it’s done. Try to explain that to people, and they look at you as though you’ve just told them you’ve had their mum over a desk while slapping the dad about with the sex toy that was just in the mother. Err…anyway it appears that in order to return to the old ways, which basically happened while back in Oswestry over christmas, I must further step up the efforts of finding a place of solitude.

And not one of those “Studios” which isn’t even big enough to have a poo in. Yes, I saw two of those the weekend in various places and it did not make for fun viewing. The race is on, the stage is set and if only I had another thing to wrap this sentence up, it would be very good. See, can’t even string a clever sentence together now, such is the state of things.

RUN AWAY!!!

Dun duh duhhhhhh…

The Lord of Leisure | January 16, 2009

Since Saturday’s experiment with installing Windows 7 on the EvilBeast of woe, a fair amount has been going on, and once again I’ve failed in actually writing up any of it.

Hopefully the weekend will bring about lots of time to catch up, and also to finish that handy review of 2008 which started so well when back in Oswestry and then fell apart when down in London. Seems to be a pattern here….

Windows 7, here I come

The Lord of Leisure | January 10, 2009

Before I destroy the EvilBeast’s Hard Drive with the beta of Windows 7, I figured I’d write something profound beforehand….nothing springs to mind.

Self contained luxury madness

The Lord of Leisure | January 9, 2009

With the new year rubbish it’s only fair to update ya’ll on a few things which have been serving to annoy more than anything. For example, I’ve now got to the point where I don’t like where I live but can now move somewhere to sort that out.

So you get on all those countless websites offering large studios for £345345 per minute and basically what you come back with is something like this:

Heaven is a car park off the A34....

it seems that around this fair old capital of ours in Englandland, people are more than happy giving you 6 inches or room and then robbing you blind. So currently the plan is to pretend I’m hiding from bad people, say Daddy touched me in a bad place and hope that Social Services are so upset that they offer me a penthouse for £5 a year.

But when it comes to actual location, it’s rather tough as most of London is pretty much the same except for how much wee has been left in the telephone booths. For example I wandered around the other night, (as I often do often asking people if they have spare change) Shepards Bush in the West, the reason was there were a number of studio flats going around that area for around £170 per week.

Look, £170 per week for a studio is actually reasonable going here around Zone 2 it seems. Granted I could for £295 per month get a two bed house in Oswestry….balls.

Anyway, I wandered around there in the dead of night, and it seems that a fair amount is rather run down with the exception of the new Westfield shopping centre thing they opened up a little while back after the brown stuff hit the cooling device as far as money goes. That place makes Cheshire Oaks back in Sunny Cheshire look like arse. Grade-A arse.

They have areas filled with chairs nicked from people’s front rooms. They have lots of music which is nice to listen to, and hundreds of shops there, all ready to aid you as much as possible. Even the normally crappy sky stands wanting you to take 500 channels of filth (and none of them having decent hard core action) was a work of art. Here have a look for yourselves at the place:

I'm sure I've seen this in one of those sci-fi films where people die when they reach 30...

Pretty sure Logan ran through there at some point as he escaped the police for being 30. Anyway that was a nice visit, pointless but nice. Thing about shopping centres, they’re evil sinister places filled with people who contemplate your financial downfall, and thus best avoided unless you carry some form of weapon.

So what I learned from an area visit to Shepards Bush was it’s the same as where I am now. Bonus. So onwards to other bold worlds to see if they look slightly better. Thing is, there will be the nagging part of me in the back of my head screaming “You robbing ba****ds” and there won’t be a thing I can do about it while I’m here in the nodnol place.

Papa’s new toy

The Lord of Leisure |

The problem with geeks is that we want to try new things all the time without the fear of breaking things which work perfectly fine right now:

Enter Windows 7…

The desktop of Windows 7. Err....

Yep. Nothing better to do.

But moving on from that bitter sweet moment of truth, Microsoft tomorrow releases the beta to the public that are hpoing that Windows 7 isn’t as effing awful as Vista was.

And before anyone says anything, I use Vista at work, things are still broke even now such as Group Policy Management console freezing, the slow response from network resources, the hard drive still grinds on occasion despite the service pack, high memory usage and the drain on the poor crappy Intel graphics chipset is more heartbreaking than those silly adverts to sponsor a donkey.

So there, I win. All hail me.

Now because I’m a little gunshy about Windows 7 as a result of the previous OS, I haven’t floored the EVILBEAST of DOOM with the beta just yet. It’s sitting in a VM by itself, with 2GB of RAM, both cores at the ready seeing as Vista raped ye olde single processor machines without caring. And so far, the experience has been pretty much the same.

There are some differences like the updated Media Player that can play DIVX out the box, Paint and Wordpad have been sexed up to look like Office 2007, and things have been moved around again. And there is a handy screen capture thing built in called “Snipping Tool” which will help with print screens….if you care about that that is…err….That’s as far as I’ve got really.

Performance on the VM is woeful as the HD is being bent over the desk and made to feel like a dirty girl. Yes, that’s the second sex phrase I’ve worked into this so far.

Another image of Windows 7. Not quite porn is it?

The gadgets don’t seem to work, IE8 breaks websites due to MS not keeping to standards for so long, then changing their minds and well just the fact it reminds me too much of Vista, I’m undecided. Far too early and there is next to nothing on there to see if the application compatibility is any better.

The only proper way of seeing what has improved is to install on the beast proper, but that will wait till the weekend. There are more lies to create…

2009, one more than 2008

The Lord of Leisure | January 1, 2009

Nice pretty picture for new year!

Happy new year everyone who can still read after getting far too drunk on various substances of their choice! Yes, we leave the train wreak of 2008 behind for the pretend idea that a new year will mean fresh starts for everything.

Thing is, I will be one of the sheep who will go to the gym in the vain attempt of thinking this year I will get fit, get bored after 3 weeks as it cuts into my sleeping time, and then just go every so often till the subscription thing they sign you up for runs out, basically just to ogle the ladies there who let’s be honest are just putting themselves on the meat market to be seen.

And here’s to the post written about the gym which will just end up repeating what I just said in this one!

Ooh, hark at him all high and mighty…wait, what I am saying? Ah who cares, it’s all silly anyway and let’s hope it remains a load of old kneecaps so we all still have things to laugh at like we did last year. Take it easy ya’ll!
